The Ruwenzori mountain chimpanzees are facing a lot of threats, because so many illegal activities are taking place in the area, and you should know that people face considerable challenges that are triggered by poverty, political instability so in order to satisfy their basic day to day needs, people don’t have other alternatives, most of the people do get their daily bread using hand hoe farming activities, burning agriculture, so imagine what can be their life standard, some people with bad will in order to make quick money they prefer to conduct illegals activities which are not so friendly to the environment, during my preliminary field survey in the area the following illegal activities were identified:

-logging activities

-illegal and unplanned fire caused by burning agriculture

-Poaching activities both with guns and dogs, snare

-Deforestation

-Timber harvesting

During my visit in the area one of the local chief whom i found full involved in timber harvesting activities told me that, some months back he was an activist in the O.A.N association, then after he did not get any benefit from protecting chimpanzees in Mwenda that why in order to survive , he has been oblige to leave the association and to start logging and harvesting timber in the area, unfortunately different activities which are taking place in the area are not compatible with the conservation of fauna and Flora.

This sickens me and it is disappointing to know it is not stopping in any way in these areas-terrible news!

What is happening is really horrible, and the worst thing is that it’s continuing all the time….I just wish it could stop….

Godfroid, what benefits was the chief expecting from his membership in the O.A.N.? Monetary benefit? Perhaps this chief doesn’t truly understand the mission of the O.A.N. and revisiting the benefits of conservation would help him?

Can’t see any pics. : ( It’s a shame that the chief does not see the benefit in saving his forest. I hope he reconsiders at some point because someday it will be too late. Lisa

Dear Sherryl, thank you very much for reading again my new article, the chief is expecting direct benefit which means money, but i have try to talk to him perssonnaly i have sensitize him and after on seeing the emergency of the situation, i have been obliged to send Rangers from my heard quater/Virunga North, in the Area to assist O.A.N people to stop these illegal activities, but what i’m afraid about is that, chimps in this area are really frustrutated, let’s hope that he will change, as you know education is a continous process, with time as i’m already with O.A.N people he will understand, not easy, these are conservation challenges, i will not be discourage, i will continue to struggle, and it is an opportunity for me to learn from these challenges. From now on i am regular in the area,he will change i hope so,my worry is that i’m not able to reach all the area of Ruwenzori long of 120KM,and width of 40 km, what are illegal activities taking place in other area, Ruwenzori chimps are really threatened, it need a rescue team in the area, most of them they developed a defense mecanism, they are now concentrated in in accessible gauges

Dear Bruno,it is true what is happening in the area really it is not interesting, but i have sent Rangers in the area, i have also sensitize the chief, let’s hope that he will change his attitude toward the conservation of the community forest, the problem is that really i need a strong support as you know the ruwenzori area is so big, and still up to now these illegal activities have been observed just in a small portion of the Ruwenzori, what about in other area where i do not reach, what is true chimps are in the area but they are not in peace, those are the conservation challenges that i am facing
Thank you!

Dear Wanda,
Really terrible news, but you should know that war is not incentive to conservation, in Congo DRC, we are just in a post conflict preiod , but i hope that one day the Ruwenzori, particulary this community conservation forest will be restaured and chimpanzee will enjoy,i think it is up to you and me to think about how to restaure the environment of chimps,
Thank you !

Godefroid,
Just wanted to say Hi and let you know I was quite worried yesterday when The wildlifeDirect site was down. Is the fighting very close to you too? I hope not, for the sake of you, your rangers and the animals. Hoping you are safe.
Much Love and Peace,
Debbie
